HBO Confirms First Cast Members for Upcoming Harry Potter TV Series

Entertainment Desk – April 15, 2025

The wizarding world is coming back to screens in a big way, and HBO has officially unveiled the first names joining the cast of its highly anticipated Harry Potter television reboot.

The network has confirmed that British actors Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Paul Whitehouse will portray some of the series' most iconic characters for a whole new generation of fans.

Nick Frost, renowned for his standout roles in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, will step into the iconic role of Rubeus Hagrid—the cherished half-giant and keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. Acclaimed actress Janet McTeer will step into the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu, praised for his breakout performance in I May Destroy You, has been cast as the complex and mysterious Severus Snape.

Comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse, known for The Fast Show and Gone Fishing, has also joined the cast as the cantankerous Hogwarts caretaker, Argus Filch.

HBO also reiterated the casting of veteran actor John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, a detail first revealed earlier this year. Lithgow, known for roles in The Crown and 3rd Rock from the Sun, recently won an Olivier Award for portraying author Roald Dahl on stage.

Still Waiting for the Golden Trio

While these major roles have been filled, the search continues for the young actors who will play the central trio—Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. HBO previously opened casting calls for these roles, receiving over 30,000 submissions from aspiring witches and wizards around the world.

Filming is expected to begin this summer, with the first season potentially premiering sometime in 2026.

A Fresh Take on a Magical Legacy

This reboot promises to be a more in-depth and faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original book series, allowing room to explore characters and storylines that were compressed or omitted in the previous films. Rowling is on board as an executive producer, and the project is being helmed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) and executive producer Mark Mylod.

“We’re thrilled to have such remarkable talent joining the series,” Gardiner and Mylod said in a joint statement. “Each of these actors brings something unique to their role, and we can’t wait to watch them bring these iconic characters to life.”

What’s Next?

While excitement builds for this magical revival, rumors continue to swirl about more casting announcements. Fans are especially eager to hear who will play Lord Voldemort, with names like Cillian Murphy being floated by the rumor mill.

Stay tuned for more updates as HBO continues to assemble the cast and prepare to bring the wizarding world back to life—one spell at a time.
